Job Definition

Assists the District in complying with federal, state, and local environmental laws and regulations, including but not limited to solid and dangerous waste, spill response and remediation, hazardous substance transport and storage, storm water management and work in or near wetlands and sensitive areas. Carries out District policies and programs regarding electric and magnetic fields, site assessments, pollution prevention, bird injury prevention and response, erosion and sediment control and the Washington State Environmental Policy Act.

 

The Environmental Affairs Department is a high-performing, collaborative team that provides environmental expertise to advocate for and facilitate environmental excellence in utility operations, delivering on the PUD's commitment to delivering affordable power and water to our customers in a safe, environmentally sustainable, and reliable manner. We are seeking an energetic, customer-focused Environmental Specialist I to join our team and grow your environmental compliance skills under the guidance of senior environmental professionals.

 

In this role, you will support the Environmental Affairs team in day-to-day compliance with environmental laws, regulations, and permits. Working closely with senior staff, you will assist with coordinating environmental activities, gathering and organizing information, and helping implement established environmental programs. You will contribute to sustainability and environmental health efforts through data collection, documentation, and field/office support. You will also participate in PUD's spill response program, including rotating on-call after-hours response duties with four other team members, with training and support provided.

 

This position offers opportunities to learn a wide range of environmental work across the PUD while contributing to team goals. Tasks may range from routine to moderately complex and will be completed with direction and review from senior environmental professionals. You will help track and summarize environmental requirements and program activities, maintain files and records, assist with inspections and audits, support permit and reporting deliverables, and help collect and compile environmental and sustainability metrics for internal reporting. You will exemplify the PUD's values and commitment, while supporting a vital role in the PUD's mission.

Experience/Education

Environmental Specialist I     $93,677 - $117,097

Minimum Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's Degree in Environmental Health, Environmental Science, Engineering, or other Technical or Scientific field relating to environmental matters.

 

Preferred Education and Experience:

  • Educational background in the environmental sciences with special emphasis in the environmental health and occupational health sciences.


Minimum Required License(s) and/or Certification(s):

  • Valid Washington State Driver's License with a good driving record
  • Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response certification (HAZWOPER) within six (6) months of start date


Preferred Licenses(s) and/or Certifications(s):

  • Certified Erosion & Sedimentation Control Lead certification (CESCL)
  • Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act Inspector Certification (AHERA Inspector)

 

Environmental Specialist II     $104,918 - $131,148

Minimum Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's Degree in Environmental Health, Environmental Science, Engineering, or other Technical or Scientific field relating to environmental matters, AND
  • Two (2) years of experience in the application of environmental laws/regulations to business, industry, or governmental operations.


Preferred Education and Experience:

  • Educational background in the environmental sciences with special emphasis in the environmental health and occupational health sciences.


Minimum Required License(s) and/or Certification(s):

  • Valid Washington State Driver's License with a good driving record
  • Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response certification (HAZWOPER) within six (6) months of start date


Preferred Licenses(s) and/or Certifications(s):

  • Certified Erosion & Sedimentation Control Lead certification (CESCL)
  • Asbestos Hazard Emergency Response Act Inspector Certification (AHERA Inspector)
  • Progress to achieve, or achievement of nationally recognized professional credential demonstrating knowledge and commitment in the field of professional environmental practice.
