Qualifications, Requirements & Testing

Q: Do I need utility experience to apply? 

     A: While some roles require specific experience or certifications, others are open to candidates with transferable skills and a willingness to learn. 

Q: Are background checks required? 

     A: Yes, all offers are contingent upon successful completion of a background check. 

Q: Are drug screens required?  

     A: Positions that require a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) are subject to pre-employment drug testing. If a job requires a CDL, it will be indicated in the job posting.

     A: Certain roles may require extra tests to evaluate relevant skills and knowledge.

Compensation, Benefits, PTO & Holiday

Q: What compensation do you offer?   

     A: Snohomish County PUD offers a competitive base salary. A candidate will be placed in the salary range based on their education and experience relative to the job minimum qualifications and our salary guidelines.  In addition to base salary, we offer a rich benefits package comprised of retirement contributions, health and wellness benefits, paid time off and more.  

Q: What benefits do you offer? 

     A: Snohomish County PUD contributes to a full-time employee’s core benefit package including medical, dental, core term life, long term disability, and core accidental death & dismemberment (AD&D). In addition, there are a variety of optional voluntary benefits available:  flexible spending accounts, health savings account (must be enrolled in HDHP), voluntary AD&D and voluntary term life.  All employees and household members have access to the Employee Assistance Program (EAP).   Employee Benefits - Snohomish County PUD

Q: What does Snohomish County PUD offer for PTO and holiday options? 

     A: Employees receive 20 days of PTO during their first year of service, accrued monthly and an additional day on each anniversary for a total of 21 days. In addition, we observe 11 paid holidays (12 paid holidays starting in 2026). 

Savings & Retirement

Q: What are the savings and retirement options offered at Snohomish County PUD? 

     A: Snohomish County PUD offers two deferred compensation savings plans: a 457 Deferred Compensation Pan and a 401(k) Savings Plan. We match 100% of an employees’ contributed wages to the 401(k) Savings Plan per paycheck currently at 3.5% and increasing to 4% as of 1/1/2026. 

Eligible employees are enrolled as members of the Washington State Public Employee’s Retirement System (PERS) administered by the Department of Retirement Systems (DRS) in one of the following plans: PERS Plan 2 or PERS Plan 3. 

Social Security 

Snohomish County PUD is not a social Security covered employer. New employees participate in the Medicare portion of Social Security only. 

Retirement Health Savings Plan (RHS) 

All newly eligible employees receive a monthly contribution into a PUD sponsored RHS Plan, provided they have paid 1 hour paid in that month. Upon separation or retirement, participants may use their account to get reimbursed for qualified out of pocket health care expenses, including premiums.

     A: We offer on-site fitness centers at multiple locations, wellness initiatives and challenges, quarterly on-site blood drives, free parking, PUD Employee Association (PUDEA), Team PUD Family Day, Safety Days, and Employee and Team of the Month awards. 

Work Environment

Q: What are typical work hours? 

     A: Most positions follow a Monday through Friday schedule, though some roles (like field crews or customer service) may require shift work including evenings and weekends, on-call duty, or overtime.

     A: Some positions offer hybrid or remote work options, depending on the role and department needs. 

Q: Do you offer union positions? 

     A: Yes, many of our roles are represented by IBEW Local No.77, whom we work closely with to ensure fair compensation and working conditions.

Internships & Early Career Opportunities

Q: Does Snohomish County PUD offer internships? 

     A: Yes, Snohomish County PUD provides internship opportunities for students interested in gaining hands-on experience in the utility and energy sectors. These internships are typically offered during the summer and designed to support students pursuing degrees in many fields.  

Q: Who is eligible to apply for an internship? 

     A: Most internships are for college students who have finished at least one year of study in an accredited program. Some positions are also open to recent graduates or high school students through career-focused programs. 

Q: What kinds of projects do interns work on? 

     A: Interns at Snohomish County PUD contribute to real-world projects that support the utility’s operations, sustainability goals, and customer service initiatives. Past interns have worked on substation design, hydropower operations, solar program support, fisheries biology, and system planning. 

Q: Are internships paid? 

     A: Yes, Snohomish County PUD internships are paid positions. Compensation varies depending on the role and the intern’s level of education and experience.
