We are currently recruiting for an Assistant Designer OR Designer. Title and salary will depend on qualifications.

Job Definition

Successfully learn and perform basic technical work related to the design, maintenance, operations, improvements of and additions to the District’s electric system in a safe, timely, and cost effective manner to enable the District to realize its goals and objectives.  Performs assignments that utilize readily available procedures and standards.  Assists project leaders on assigned projects and tasks.

Distinguishing Characteristics

DIRECTION RECEIVED:

Supervisor or Team leader screen assignments for unusual or difficult problems and selects techniques and procedures to be applied on non-routine work. Receives close direction and review on all aspects of assignments. Receives training on District standards, practices, and procedures. Manages time to work concurrently on multiple assignments.

Essential Job Functions

Develops an understanding of basic utility standards/practices through use of pre-established standards, practices and procedures on assigned tasks by assisting with such things as layout, locating, small line extensions, substation and structural modifications.

 

Researches engineering field data and assists in developing solutions to simple to complex design problems by using engineering software.

 

Inspects new construction and existing facilities for maintenance, modifications or improvements and provides construction recommendations to correct identified deficiencies.

 

Assists and/or prepares estimates including establishing material requirements from engineering drawings/sketches, detailed project schedules for labor, equipment, and material resources.

 

Effectively performs assigned projects and tasks of a limited scope involving basic design principles used at the District, simple calculations, and use of pre-established standards.

 

Collects, correlates and analyzes data on assigned projects and tasks and assists in the preparation of findings.

 

Assists and/or prepares revisions to equipment specifications, material specifications, and/or contract specifications using pre-established standards and practices.

 

Responds to and investigates customer inquiries, questions and complaints; provides information concerning services, programs, projects, policies and objectives.  Seeks assistance in interpreting policies and procedures.

Minimum Qualifications

Knowledge of:

• Basic engineering sciences and mechanics, mathematics and its application to engineering computations.

• Fundamentals of electricity.

• Engineering estimate preparation.

• Electric utility construction standards and practices, District policies and procedures.

• Surveying instruments.

• Record-keeping techniques.

• Customer relations techniques.

• Computers and applicable computer applications.

• District’s mission, objectives, values and business drivers.

Ability to:

• Work in a team environment with a strong customer focus on both internal customers and external customers.

• Successfully complete assigned tasks within schedules.

• Plan and organize work, incorporating changing District priorities.

• Proficient use of latest technologies applicable and available at the District in performing assigned tasks and projects.

• Learn the District’s work authorization procedures.

• Learn and apply District policies and procedures.

• Learn to interpret and apply codes, regulations, policies and procedures.

• Prepare scope of work, schedules and cost estimates for labor and materials.

• Assist in training other department personnel in the area of expertise.

• Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

• Maintain records and prepare reports including preparation of computer databases.

• Understand and follow oral and written directions.

• Perform inspections on the assigned tasks to assure compliance with the project specifications.

• Learn and use engineering tools required for the job.

• Drive District vehicles.

Experience/Education

Assistant Designer

  • Associate of Arts Degree in an Engineering related field;

OR

  • High School Diploma or equivalent; AND
  • 2 years related engineering, business or marketing experience or applicable technical education.

 

Designer

  • Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Engineering; or
  • The equivalent combination of related education and experience. 

OR

  • 2 years directly related work experience performing technical and basic engineering services related to the design, maintenance, operations, improvements of and additions to a Utility’s electric system. *Must have demonstrated the successful accomplishment of work of the nature defined for this job level, “Designer”

 

Note: For the employee who has met the minimum entry education and experience requirements for any of the above job levels, the additional time required to be proficient in performing the job is six months to one year.

License/Certification

• Valid Washington State Driver License.

Working Conditions

• Duties are performed both in an office environment and in field situations in varying weather conditions that include utility construction sites and work in vicinity of energized equipment and conductors.

• Requires the ability to walk and/or climb around uneven terrain and construction sites in possible inclement weather.

• Must drive District vehicles to various work sites/locations.

• Must be able to lift and carry equipment, boxes, tools, drawings, packages, etc., up to 25 pounds.

• Incumbents perform repetitive movements from use of a computer and mouse.

• Frequent phone contact with various customers.
