We do not have an Equipment Operator vacancy to fill currently but anticipate having additional Equipment Operator vacancies open up over the course of the next twelve (12) months. This recruitment is to establish a pool of qualified Operators that we may draw from over the next year. In order to be eligible for the pool candidates must successfully pass each step of the process, which includes application review, testing, and interviewing.

Job Definition

A person who operates all District equipment vehicles used in the installation and maintenance of transmission and distribution systems. This position is under the direction of Line Foreman and Construction Superintendent.

Essential Job Functions

  1. Ensures and maintains alignment with District safety values and priorities.
  2. Operates of all types of District equipment including but not limited to underground puller, chipper, digger/derrick, backhoe, field generators, concrete cutters, air compressors, dump trucks, small cranes, jack hammers, compactors, pavement rollers, aerial lifts, etc. in a safe and efficient manner.
  3. Drives District vehicles and transport loads with or without trailers in tow.
  4. Performs all duties of Line Helper Classification when needed.
  5. Follows applicable safety rules contained in the District's Accident Prevention Manual, OSHA and Washington State Electrical Workers Safety Rules.

  1. Provides on-the-job training as necessary.
  2. Ensures proper use and care of equipment assigned.
  3. Completes work in a safe and efficient manner.
  4. Minimizes damage to public and private property during line construction and maintenance.
  5. Completes time slips, and necessary reports affecting job assignments.
  6. Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Knowledge of:
• Applicable policies, procedures and agreements of the District. Local codes and requirements.
• Materials and tools used in the installation and maintenance of transmission and distribution systems.
• Restoration equipment as mentioned above.
• Applicable OSHA, Washington State Electrical Workers Safety Rules, and District Accident Prevention Manual.
• Various forms, reports, time slips and how to complete them.
Ability to:
• Interact and communicate with District personnel, customers and government officials as necessary to complete assignments.
• Use tools of the trade.
• Operate heavy equipment utilized by the industry, i.e., bulldozer, excavator, backhoe, and related.
• Adapt to driving and operating various District vehicles.
• Provide on-the-job training as necessary.

Experience/Education

  • Three (3) years of experience driving heavy-duty vehicles and operating various types of heavy equipment utilized by the construction industry, OR
  • Completion of a certified Equipment Operator Apprentice program.
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.

License/Certification

• Successfully pass the Equipment Operator test.
• Valid Washington State Driver License.
• Valid current Washington State Commercial Driver License (Class A) within 6 months from job start date.
• Subject to DOT regulatory random drug testing upon obtaining Commercial Driver License.
• Obtain valid CPR and First Aid certificates within 3 months from job start date.

Working Conditions

• Work is performed in an outdoor environment in varying weather conditions.
• Employees risk physical hazard from energized equipment and circuits.
• Must be able to lift and carry heavy equipment and materials in excess of 65 lbs.
• Must be able to perform rescue operations, including Pole Top and Vault Rescue.
• Must be able to work long hours as storm conditions dictate.
• Subject to 24-hour call-out for emergency conditions.
